In 1828, the world of chocolate changed. In Amsterdam, Casparus Van Houten worked with the latest technology of the time and, in doing so, invented the cocoa hydraulic press. For the first time, he separated cocoa liquor from cocoa butter, thus revolutionizing cocoa. From that moment on, making cocoa powder became relatively inexpensive.

THE QUEST FOR THE PERFECT SERVING

Casparus' son, Coenraad Van Houten, took up the mantle and continued to further perfect cocoa powder. After years of learning from his father, he invented the now world-famous Dutching process. By alkalizing the cocoa, it lost its bitter taste and became the sweet and mildly colored substance we all know and love today.

The discovery even paved the way for the invention of the chocolate bar. It also made volume production possible and made chocolate as a whole accessible.
