In 1828, the world of chocolate changed. In Amsterdam, Casparus Van Houten worked with the newest technology of the time and thus invented the hydraulic cocoa press. He separated cocoa liquor from cocoa butter for the first time, revolutionizing cocoa. Since then, the manufacture of cocoa powder has become relatively cheap.

Casparus' son, Coenraad Van Houten, took over baton and continued to further refine the cocoa powder. The discovery even paved the way for the invention of the chocolate bar. It also made volume production possible and made chocolate as a whole affordable.
